A Day in the Life of Lisa Lactivist

The alarm goes off at 7 am but I am generally woken but the cat walking over my head and purring in my face. I take this to be a hint that she wants feeding. If the cat doesn’t wake me up then my 7 year old does, coming into bed and cold footing me. He has been quite cuddly lately but not in public!

The computer takes a while to warm up so I start it up and go and make T’s packed lunch and sort out breakfast. While porridge is on or toast is burning I’ll check my emails and see what the day has in store. I have about 4 different email accounts to check, I run www.lactivist.co.uk which sells slogan t-shirts, bags, badges and postcards that promote breastfeeding,  www.lactivistbling.co.uk which sells nursing necklaces and reminder bracelets, www.lactivist.net which is for news and views about breastfeeding. I also do graphic design work under the name of www.nakedwebsite.co.uk and I am trying to re-locate from inner city Bristol to the country so as you can imagine my inboxes are stuffed.

It is only a 15 minute walk to school so I am back just after 9 to put the computer on again and knuckle down.  Because my work is so fragmented I try to allocate days to do different things and theoretically Mondays are Lactivist days, I have just moved the site onto new software so that is needing a fair bit of work at the moment as well as replying to emails, packing orders off, updatingLactivist Net with any newsworthy items and checking the Facebook page for any queries or cries for help. Lactivist Net has an ‘Ask Aunty Lactivist’ section which people use for support and I quite often get urgent questions that need posting.

My local post office is lovely – I take my big blue Ikea bag of parcels, waltz to the front of the queue and leave it there for them to sort out and I go in and pay later, it is better for them because they can do the packages in their own time and nobody in the post office threatens me because I take too long.

I have my computer set so that Facebook blocks for an hour at 11am and that forces me to get off the sofa (I work on a laptop) and do a bit of housework and sort some lunch out.  Parking is impossible around here so I can’t drive anywhere until after noon because I won’t be able to find a space when I get back – if I need to I go shopping after lunch.

My son sees his dad twice a week after school so on Tuesdays and Fridays I have longer working days, the rest of the week work stops at 3 and continues in the evening when T is in bed. I try not to work at the weekends and just have fun with my son.

I work in a very unusual way but having done it like this for so long I think I’d find it very difficult to work for anyone else now.
