Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays start at 5.55am. Well, that’s when the alarm clock goes off. Often my daughter Cerys, who is 4, has appeared a couple of minutes earlier and together with her cuddly panda she’s keeping the middle of the bed warm. I leave her in bed with my husband and go to get dressed. I run an early morning fitness class in a park in Ashley Cross, Parkstone (www.sbfexerciseclasses.co.uk) so this time of year I’m pulling on my workout gear, hat and gloves and heading out into the dark. I love these sessions. I have a small group of dedicated women who join me from 6.30-7.15 for their early morning workout, every session is different and every session is great fun.
Sometimes I go straight on to a Personal Training (www.seabreezefitness.co.uk) appointment but on other days I head home where thehousehold is in full swing. My husband hands me a cup of tea as I head upstairs with Kieran (5) and Cerys to help them get ready for a day at school. The next hour follows the same chaotic pattern as most other households with young kids and at 8.30am, after breakfast, we head out the door and down the hill to school. I enjoy doing the school run it’s my opportunity to speak to other mums and catch up on the latest news, I also get to talk to my kids without all the distractions of home.
I’m normally back from school at about 9am. The first thing I do is my own workout, usually a cycle to the beach followed by a run and a cycle home again or a swim, it takes about an hour but is an essential part of my morning and means that I am awake and ready for work. I am also determined to do a triathlon in 2011 and this is the best time of day to do some training.
Late mornings are my time for blog posts, newsletters, and accounts. In the early afternoon I tend to tackle programme writing and marketing. On other days I run FitKid PE sessions at local primary schools.
Three days a week I collect my children from school at 3pm. We do some homework, do some playing and get ready for tea. On the other days they go to after school club and this is when my practical work with teenagers (www.maggieayre.com) takes place. I currently run after school sessions at the Dolphin Swimming Pool, Poole which are open to every teenage girl and their mother, and sessions with the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rossmore, at a local school. The focus for these sessions is on having fun and we certainly seem to achieve that! I mainly work with girls who by their own admittance “don’t do exercise” and find it incredibly rewarding when they enjoy the sessions, come back week after week and start bringing their friends. A couple of weeks ago one girl told me that my sessions were the “best part of her whole week”, I’m still grinning from ear to ear!
We try to have tea as a family at least 3 or 4 times a week during the winter (this decreases in the summer with my husband and I taking full advantage of long evenings to do some sailing) and then it’s family time before the kids go to bed. A couple of evenings I am then off out the door to run teenage girl sessions at local youth groups, or go and play netball, on the others I tend to get a bit more work done.
My husband and I make a point of sitting down together for an hour most nights. Often we’ve only got the energy to collapse in front of the TV but we also catch up on each others days, talk about what the kids are up to and plan for tomorrow.
Then it’s off to bed, a good nights sleep and ready for another busy day.
