I’d like to be able to write one of those really organised mumpreneur day in the life posts – you know the inspirational ones where the mums get up at 5.30am have the whole day blocked into little chunks and tick everything off on their fantastic to do lists… well that’s the type of person I aspire to be and I’m not quite there yet!
The truth is every day in the life of Littlesheep Learning is different because that is the whole point of having my own business – working around the children, family life and the other things I want to do (mainly volunteering for NCT).
So whilst there is no such thing as a typical day here are some thoughts:
When I get up, I check email on my phone, reply to anything urgent and inwardly smile at orders placed overnight. Sometimes I have time to read some of the blogs in my blog reader and scan twitter too.
Then it is the mad rush of making sure the children (I have three boys 3,5 and 7) are up and having breakfast and the usual stress of getting said small people out of door to nursery and school with everything they need for the day (trying not to shout too much).
This is where the routine goes out of the window as it really depends on what day of the week it is.
Generally I have the mornings free for work whilst they are all at school or nursery. Wednesdays the little one does a full day so I have until 3.15pm (but I am also on a rota to be a volunteer peer supporter that morning some weeks) and he doesn’t go on a Friday so I have to work round him then).
Then there are the school assemblies and the last minute change of plans to become a parent helper on a school trip – I wouldn’t miss these things for anything – the business is important but so long as the customers’ parcels get despatched and enquiries get dealt with everything else can wait for 24 hours if the children or school need me.
So Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 11.50-12.40 is the dawdle home from nursery then we have lunch, finish packing up parcels and aim to get to the post office before picking the big two up from school (three children and a post office queue is not a good mix!). I love Wednesdays when I get to go to the post office by myself and look forward to September when I’ll get that post office run every day!
Once we are home from school the routine thing again goes with their myriad of after school activities and homework. I generally check my emails / read my blog reader during this time but it isn’t really quality work time until they are in bed! Then in the evenings I can work again.
Priorities in work time are packing up parcels, getting blog posts sorted and taking small steps of progress on my ‘to do list’ (for some reason accounts are always on there always seeming to drift towards the bottom).
I set up Littlesheep Learning to work round my family so whilst I have big plans for the future I accept that whilst the children are small for now it is manageable. Once they are all in school – watch out I will be one of those super organised mumpreneurs with my little chunked out diary too!
