Operation Office – Part 1

Before Olive was born I persuaded Daddy Moo to get me a desk .. it was 2nd hand and fit perfectly in the space we had.  Whilst pregnant I started to get really uncomfortable sitting at the desk so went off to the living room and the comfy sofa.  Over the past 2 years I have been in and out of love with the desk.  Mainly I think it is because the space isn’t working for me … it has become an area to dump items and then I have no room to work.  So I go somewhere less well cluttered! But actually when I sit down to work at the desk away from the kitchen, food, television, slouchy sofa – I work much better.

So this is my workspace at present.

Pretty hey?!

Some questions to consider :-

  1. Think what do I need?
  2. What do I want?
  3. What do I heart felt want eg kid items?
  4. Do you want a clear desk before bed or are you more a cluttered person?
  5. Plan how you work, do you like to look outside/at a plant /kids photos /pics etc.
  6. Do you bring clients home?
  7. Is this space just for you?
  8. Set yourself a brief of what you require treat it as you would in dealing with a client.
  9. Clear ideas – you will adapt things later to suit.
  10. Colour is also important.

(Thank you to Katherine Cromwell for all these awesome questions which she asked me on my FB page)

I could go crazy and buy a big traditional wooden bookcase to house an array of box files, neatly arranged fabric etc … but to be honest I don’t want to spend a lot of money – especially as I do have a very good sturdy desk to begin with! I think the main issue is organisation, storage and shelving – there is a lot of un-utilised wall space above and around the desk.

I’ve just moved from the ‘office’ corner of our living room to the box room. It’s great to have a dedicated space of my own again. I spent a lot of time sussing out how to arrange it. Keeping spending to a minimum was important. I’ve swapped a bookcase from another room so I have an IKEA Billy bookcase which is giving me plenty of room for storing all the plastic baskets and boxes of craft things (not just Poppy Sparkles jewellery stuff). I have several of those magazine racks/file box things which I use to sort bits such as sheets of address labels, things to be filed etc.

The biggest thing for me in keeping my room tidy will be making sure I put things away. I’m trying to make myself have a tidy before a close the door for the day or night, so that when I return it’s ready for me to work straight away and not have to tidy first!

Hope you can find some solutions to suit you xo

I have a chest of drawers for my desk, a whiteboard I rescued from a skip and my beloved lemon grass as an office pet. Makes such a difference.

Sounds fab! I think I could possibly do with a whiteboard!
