Argh… I had this idea for this blog whilst listening to the radio in the car weeks ago but due to this, that and everything in between am only just sitting down to write it. I love a bit of cheesy pop music so One Direction is right up my street – as in I will listen to it in the car, for all of you imagining me screaming “One Direction” and waving my pants in the air! 😉
So unless you live under a rock, you would have heard the huge news that One Direction have broken records in America by selling 176,000 copies of their début album in its first week. The first UK group that has ever done this. Not bad for 5 boys put together by a reality TV show.
OK so your thinking I have lost the plot now what has this got to do with er .. small business?? Well I’ve done some research about One Direction and social media. (You with me now) Right so here’s the stats .. if your not sitting you probably should do now!
One Direction’s Twitter account had 2 million followers as of February 2012, and on average acquires another 24,000 followers per day. (As I write this they have 2,546,006 followers) Facebook Likes – 3,934,621, You Tube Subscribers – 335,924 and 35,183,651 video views.
Sonny Takhar, the chief executive officer of Syco Records, attributes the breakthrough to the power of social media . “It’s a real moment. Social media has become the new radio, it’s never broken an act globally like this before.”
As small business owners we know the power that lies within our use of social media – no secret there. But sometimes when you work and work and can so no return in your time investment other than er .. loss of time! It’s reassuring to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel! Social media takes time – developing relationships and nurturing your customer base.
So in the words of One Direction my social media follower – that’s what makes you beautiful 😉
