Does the way you look affect job prospects?

Does the way you look affect your job prospects? One would hope in this day and age it doesn’t but I think we have to be realistic about how often we as a person pass assumptions about people and places without even realising. In 2014 GradWeb conducted a survey amongst their client base to see whether in fact the way you look does in fact affect your job prospects.

These are my 3 main key points:

  • As expected the 2014 report continues to highlight a significant difference in terms of gender. Overall applications – 64.07% for men versus 35.45% for women
  • Applications for disabled graduates have continued to increase this however this still falls below the 9% of graduates who are registered disabled. Thus meaning that either disabled job seekers are not declaring that they have a disability or they are less confident in finding employment with corporate organisations and therefore don’t apply in the first instance.
  • It is also clear from the report that more work with companies’ is required in the recruitment process of ethnic minority candidates.
