- What They Eat: It all starts with breakfast which is the most important meal of the day. Food gives us energy and affects our mood. For children it’s important that it includes all of the essential nutrients needed for their growth and development. Foods containing high amounts of sugar on the other hand should be avoided. While great initially for a boost of energy, children can feel lethargic after a short while of having them and experience a “crash”. A balanced diet, coupled with plenty of water will keep your child feeling full and energised throughout the school day.
- Foods That Are Good for The Brain: Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids like fatty fish are particularly good for brain health and function so you will want to try and incorporate them into their diet. Berries are also foods that you should add. According to Harvard Medical School, they help improve memory which they will need to absorb and remember what they’ve been taught in class.
- Sleep: A lack of sleep can make us irritable. It can also make it difficult for children to concentrate and retain information which isn’t good for their learning. For the best start to their day, it’s important that children have plenty of sleep the night before. While the amount of sleep they should get varies depending on age, children should get a minimum of 7-8 hours of rest a night.
- Screen Time: While experts have concluded that screen time can be good for children, given that they use their time productively, devices can be highly addictive. Monitoring screen time can help children to spend their time wisely, e.g., complete all homework they’ve been set, and become more in tune with the world around them. It will establish healthy habits for the future and help them make time for their school commitments.
- Staying Active: It’s important for children to move around and be active. As well as helping them to build strength, exercise helps children to de-stress and can help regulate their emotions as it releases “feel good” chemicals into the brain known as endorphins. This can lead to improved mental wellbeing and performance at school.
