Hen parties. Do they conjure up images of screeching women, drunk on cheap shots and even cheaper Prosecco who end the night holding each other’s hair while they throw up in the gutter?
This doesn’t have to be you!
If you’d like to make your hen party a night to remember for the right reasons instead of a night you probably won’t remember at all, here’s how not to get too drunk at your hen party.
Have a hen party that doesn’t involve alcohol:
You might be getting married at an Essex wedding venue but that doesn’t mean you have to act like a stereotypical Essex girl. There are plenty of ways to enjoy your hen party that doesn’t involve getting drunk and disgracing yourself by snogging the barman and throwing up the kebab you bought on the way home.
Don’t believe us?
Here are a few examples:
For brides-to-be who like eating
- Baking class
- Cooking class
- Chocolate making class
- Afternoon tea
or a bit of culture
- Go to the theatre
- Go on a guided tour
- Visit an exhibition
- Go to a museum or art gallery
but if you’re an adrenaline junkie
- Do a treetop challenge such as Go Ape
- Visit a theme park
- Go indoor skydiving
- Do a bungee jump (you can even get married while doing a bungee jump if that’s your thing)
Also, there’s nothing to stop you from getting in your car or on a train for a change of scenery for the day. So, if you live in the city, take a trip into the country or to the coast, and if you live on the coast or in the country, take a trip to the city.
However, if all your friends would disown you and refuse to go to your wedding if your hen party didn’t involve going to a bar at some point in the day, here’s how you can at least take some steps to stay sober (or sober-ish) at your hen do.
Eat healthily before you go out:
We’ve all heard the advice to line our stomachs before we go out drinking to help soak up the alcohol. But what you eat as well as how much you eat will also make a difference to how your night out goes.
If you merely stuff something unhealthy down you just before you go out, you’re likely to feel sluggish and lethargic. When that happens, you’ll probably be tempted to drink lots of alcohol to liven yourself up.
And what happens when you drink lots of alcohol?
You risk getting paralytic and waking up next to someone who isn’t your husband-to-be.
So, eat healthily throughout the day before your night out and you’ll feel alert and lively and in a stronger position to want to stay feeling that way.
Alternate your drinks:
When we say ‘alternate your drinks’, we don’t mean drink a cocktail followed by a glass of Prosecco followed by a shot of tequila.
To be in with a chance of staying relatively sober throughout the night, have a soft drink in between every alcoholic one.
If your friends start mithering you about not drinking, tell them your Coke is Jack Daniels and Coke, your lemonade is a gin and tonic, and your cranberry juice is a vodka and cranberry, etc. They’ll never know the difference.
Don’t feel under pressure to drink at your hen party:
Although hen parties are ubiquitous with drinking heavily and getting drunk, if that’s not your thing, don’t feel pressurised into joining in.
If you’re a non-drinker or not someone who drinks much at all, there’s no reason to change your lifestyle just because it’s a hen party.
Stick to a) your guns, and b) soft drinks and you’ll have a hen party to remember for all the right reasons.
