How fast can you type?

I’ve written over 1,000 blog posts, web content, product descriptions, oh yes and a book too! So I think I’m quite handy when it comes to typing and writing. I remember learning to touch type at school and have kinda developed my own style of typing.

I’ve talked (a lot!) about developing a healthy working environment. Home offices come in all shapes and sizes, I’m lucky enough now to have a proper office, even if it is the gap under the stairs!! But it’s still important to have a good working environment.

  • Desk : Even if it’s just your dinning table, you will be so much more productive if you feel the part. Sitting on the sofa with your laptop on your knee isn’t going to cut it full time.
  • Chair : I currently use a pine dinning chair and it isn’t the most comfortable thing for hours of writing.  To be productive and type effectively you need to be comfortable. Posture is very important for typing, you need a straight back and arms need to be at a right angle.
  • Light : If you don’t have the luxury of a window in your office invest in some daylight light bulbs.  Vitamin D will make a huge impact on your productivity.
  • Food and Drink : Fill your office with fruit and water, healthy snacks and drinks that would leave you feeling sluggish and dehydrated.

Now if your office environment is up to scratch lets look at your productivity. How well organised are you? I have a massive to do list which isn’t always the best method when it comes to sitting down to write. It can leave you feeling like you have a lot to do and makes your brain feel busy.

Think back to your schools days of learning to type. Do you use your home keys? Curve your fingers a little and place them on the ASDF and JKL; keys – these are your home keys. How often do you look at the keys? I spend more time looking at the keys than the screen. To type faster and more accurately you should be using the screen as your guide.  However the best way to develop faster typing skills is too practice! Practice using the home keys until you can build up speed. Take Note have developed a Typing Game and I thought I’d give it a go! OMG I was pretty pants! 39 words a minute! How many did you type?
