Exploring Creative Writing With Your Child

Creative writing is both an exciting and enjoyable activity for your child to do as it engages their imagination. From the perspective of a teacher, it is great as it helps them build on a variety of skills that can be used in and out of the classroom. When your child reaches exam season in secondary school and college, they will be required to write essays for most of their subjects. This means that in order for them to achieve highly, they will have to have good writing skills. This is why it is worth exploring creative writing with your child from a young age. Here are some ideas from a private nursery in Hertfordshire on how to get started with your child.

Provide them with ideas to help them get started or to find inspiration as this is usually the hardest part of starting a creative writing session. Ask them to write a diary entry about where they see themselves in 10 years’ time. Get them to include how many children they have, if they are married, have a job, where they live, what they do day-to-day and what they look like. They could even sit and write about someone or something that they love and look up to. The idea is to get their creative juices flowing.

Encourage them to read regularly as this will help them with their ability to write creatively. From here they can pick up on different genres as well as working on sentence structures, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. If your child is already reading quite regularly and has finished a book recently, their project could be to rewrite the beginning or end of the story. If they feel comfortable enough, they can start to work on their own book reviews or novels. This is a great way for your child to explore creative writing on a long-term basis and develop a love for it.

Once your child has figured out which genre they enjoy reading and writing about, use mind maps to help them jot down all their ideas, words and phrases related to the topic. If they get stuck, encourage them to think about the different senses that their characters may experience such as what they can see, hear, feel and touch.

Creative writing is something that every child can enjoy. The best part is that it can be done easily as a team.
