Patience is a virtue.

In business as in life the key word is patience. Everything is possible but some things will take longer than others and this is what separates the women from the girls.

I am a mature business mum in her early – well mid – forties and the one lesson I have learnt, above all others, is the mastery of patience. Maybe it is an age thing. As we move away from the speed of growing up and the rush of youth where our energy makes up for our lack of experience and wisdom it is inevitable, I suppose, to develop a greater appreciation of time.

But to succeed in business one needs to set realistic goals that, at the same time as firing up your mojo, also give time for your ideas to breathe and grow.

And here patience is King (or Queen). When we set off on a new business idea (no matter what our age is) it is natural for us to want the whole concept to spring into life immediately.  After all we love it, we know others will, so its bound to be an instant success – right? …well, possibly but the norm is that it will take months, if not years of hard work and huge investments of time and energy before the business starts to build and it can be up to 2 -3 years before an financial success follows.

In the current economic climate there are fantastic opportunities for fresh ideas to develop and grow. In fact more businesses are born in times of recession then in times of affluence. And if you are part of the growing wave of mums setting up business from their kitchens and spare rooms this is an exciting time. The opportunities are out there and if you have the vision and the passion nothing is beyond your grasp.

But you may have to be prepared to hang on for a long time so:

• Look to other sources of income to sustain your family whilst you build your empire and take control of your spending to maximise the income you have.
• Find a source of motivation to keep you on track – a good friend who has already started in business, a local networking forum, a business mentor/ coach etc.
• Build in personal rewards for yourself along the way to keep you on the path to meet your goals – pamper yourself, book a family weekend break, have a girls night out etc. and celebrate how far you have come!

Remember patience is a virtue. Be virtuous.
