History is the second most favoured subject of choice amongst children and it’s because they’re able to learn about cool themes like mummification, battles, and ancient medicine. The earth is approximately 4.543 billion years old and what we know about it only accounts for a fraction. Knowledge from the past has been passed on from generation to generation is how we’ve come to know about much of it today. There are valuable lessons to be taught which can help us now in the present and in making better decisions for the future. The Importance of History Lessons for Children:
Morals:
There are so many things that we did wrong as a society in the past and did not know of. The good thing now is that with hindsight we can make sure that the same mistakes aren’t made and make the world a better place.
Key Historic Events:
Following on from the point above, there were some awful events like the holocaust, etc that we must not forget about. They reinforce why we must show compassion, understanding and stand up for what is right.
Medicine:
It’s not all bad. There were great discoveries that were made with regards to medicine and healthcare which has meant that we have a greater quality of life today. Some ancient medicines like traditional Chinese herbal remedies are still in use.
Making Better Decisions for the Future:
We can also make predictions about the future based on what we’ve seen happen in the past. For example, what we saw happen in the last recession.
Culture:
It’s important for children to learn and understand their roots. It can help them in building their self-identity and feel a sense of connection and belonging.
Developing Appreciation:
Lessons can also be eye opening for children as the world has come a long way with regards to women’s rights etc. It can help them to appreciate what they have, like being able to gain an education and vote which are things that at a time were unheard of.
