The Benefits of Journaling for Children

If you’re looking for a way to help your child in English, the solution may be journaling. It’s a way of getting your child to write every day which can strengthen their writing skills (spelling, punctuation, and grammar). If you’ve ever kept a journal yourself, you will know that it can be a good way to deal with emotions. Childhood can be a turbulent time. There are lots of changes to adjust to which can throw children and bring on different emotions. A journal creates an outlet for them to talk about this and understand what they’re feeling which can make it easier. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of journaling for children, keep reading.

This post was put together with the help of a private girls’ school in London.

The Benefits of Journaling for Children

The Benefits of Journaling for Children:

  1. Creative Expression: We have dozens of creative thoughts throughout the day. Genius strikes when we least expect it and if you’re not set with a notebook and pen, it’s likely that you will forget all about them. A journal, therefore, is essential for creative children. It gives them a place to store their ideas and build upon them.
  2. Handwriting: Handwriting can take time to perfect and the more that your child writes, the better theirs will become.
  3. Organisation: A journal is handy when you have a lot going on. It’s easy to forget dates and times. If you have them written down somewhere, you’re more likely to remember than forget. This will be even more important when they’re older and have exams to prepare for.
  4. Self-Reflection: Another cool thing about journaling is that it can teach us a lot about ourselves. More than what we think we know. We can look back on how we’ve been feeling and the kind of interests that we’ve expressed to understand ourselves better. This can be helpful for a child that’s trying to find their identity and where they fit in.
  5. A Way to Look Back:  Childhood is short lived and soon your little one will be all grown up. By keeping journals, they will have a way to look back on their childhood and how they spent their time.
  6. Success at School: Practice makes perfect and writing on a more frequent basis can help a child to become a better writer. As most subjects are assessed through the means of essays and written work, this can be extremely beneficial.

Journaling, for both adults and children, is a great way to clear your mind, gather your thoughts and feel grateful for the day you have had.  Not every day is good but there is good in every day and for me writing those 3 good things down in my Daily Goal Setter really helps me to feel positive. If you don’t really like writing, you can doodle, paint or collage anything creative that helps you process the day.
