Back in my home office

back in my home office

If you follow me on social media you will know that over the summer holidays my office became somewhat a dumping ground and I’d got so caught up in the idea that I HAD to utilse the school hours effectively that I started working from the dinning room table.  My stuff was everywhere, getting in the way, bits went missing, productivity in fits and bursts and before I knew it it was November.  The stupid thing was I HAVE an office I just couldn’t face being in there due to the mess and I didn’t feel like I had “the time” to sort it out.  I stumbled across Making Spaces blog post Home Office in a Day and realised you know what I could afford ONE DAY to sort it out!!

There are so many amazing home office ideas online you’d be crazy not to give yourself a day or two to sort yourself out.  I always talk about the importance of having a work station when working from home but that doesn’t have to be an actual room. My office is under the stairs but if the only space you have available is the corner of your living room look at great storage ideas that open as a office and close to look like a piece of furniture.

Back in May (OMG! I need to sort it out my procrastination skills are on another level!) I made a list of 7 things I was going to do to make my office feel like a healthier more inviting and productive environment.  I didn’t quite do all 7 yet! But here is how I got on.

  1. Change the lightbulbs to daylight ones : Being as I’m no lightbulb expert I found this harder than you would imagine! Eventually I settled on a large LED bulb without a light shade.
  2. Try and keep my office space tidy : tidy space = tidy mind this is a work in progress but I’m getting better! I’ve the shredder by my desk meaning I have been shredding documents, posts, junk instead of piling it up! I’ve a bad habit throughout the house for piles of paper and have been taking on board these awesome tips from Money Saving Mom to eliminate 99% of the piles of paper in your home.
  3. Change my chair : Whilst I realise this chair isn’t the best for now I’ve added a cushion “Trust me I’m a blogger” gifted from Joe Blogs which has helped.
  4. Use light reflecting paints and mirrors : I painted the back wall blue (because it was left over from painting the girls room! #thrifty) and hung a massive mirror which I snapped up on gumtree for £5! This has really helped with reflecting light and making the space feel bigger. It’s also the first thing you notice as you walk through the door. Can’t wait to finish the stairs and hallway now.

Whilst my home office isn’t minimalist by any means I utilise all the space storing products and fabric for Charlie Moo’s including under the desk etc. it feels organised. I’m actually enjoying being back in my office and feel that I am being far more productive. Do you have an unusual home office? I’d quite like a she shed!

I love your little space. At the moment I have no choice other than working from the dining table/sofa, which is not helping my productivity. We are moving house in a few weeks though and I have space for a desk in the bedroom there – I am SO excited!!

It makes such a difference. I like as well that because it’s under the stairs I feel like I’ve left the office out of work mode when I’m being mum.

Loved that post Karen did too, my office is on my list this year too. It’s amazing the difference little things make, scented candles seem to make me work harder, and stay longer in my office! I have some leftover blue paint from my daughter’s room, you are inspiring me too! I want to escape the red and white and have something calmer.

Karen really inspired me to stop messing about! I mean a day is nothing in the grand scheme of things!
